Q: Has this been done before?
A: Yes, Brian Thomas, Shawn Carson, Tyler Carson, and Davis Soehn completed all approach trails in 2011. We have heard stories about others doing it, including ultra-marathoners trail running all the trails at once. Here is the account of the current record for trail running all trails (8/7/11): http://abackofbeyond.blogspot.com/2011/08/day-full-of-ups-and-downs-speed-attempt.html
Q: Why are you doing this?
A: Good question. We have both hiked all of the LeConte trails in the traditional way of taking our time, taking lots of photos, and fellowshipping with other hikers on the trail. We would be taking on this alternate approach as a fitness challenge. We are not attempting to break a record – it’s just for fun!
Q: What route will you take?
A: This is the item on which we’ve spent the most time and thought. Here is an animation that describes our 2011 plan: http://youtu.be/mXm6Gz-EYRQ
Q: What is the total mileage and elevation gain to complete all trails?
A: Approximately 45 miles and 13,000′ of climbing
Q: How long will it take?
A: If we can average 2 mph, including breaks and the 30 minute car transfer from Cherokee Orchard to Greenbriar, we should be able to do it in less than 24 hours. UPDATE: Our time in 2011 was 22 hrs; Our time in 2015 was 19.5 hrs.
Q: What will you carry?
A: For each ascent, we will carry enough water (2 liters) to get to the top and will refill at LeConte Lodge. We will carry snacks, including energy bars and gel. Other items include: camera, cell phone, first aid kit, raingear.
Q: What are you doing to prepare?
A: We are running during the week and hiking as much as possible between now and then.
